our procedures
Exterior
Surface preparation is the most important aspect of a painting job. Your University
First Class Painters manager will recommend the process necessary to properly prepare
your home for long-lasting results. The preparation process will determine the longevity
of your paint job.
Generally most exterior projects will follow this process:
-
Power wash the entire surface with TSP (Trisodium Phosphate Powder) and bleach
-
Scrape all loose and peeling paint to a solid base
-
Prime all bare and scraped areas
-
Repair missing caulking
-
Paint according to the specifications provided
There may be some deviation from the above however this process will apply to the
vast majority of exterior painting projects. In some cases a full prime may be specified
for exterior projects and in these instances the primer is likely tinted to the
finish colour, contributing to the coverage of the finish coat. Full primes are
usually employed when the priming area is over 60% and there is a colour change.
Any other preparation will be specifically stated on the proposal.
Clients are generally responsible for the following items on an exterior project:
-
Removal of all deck furniture and other items that are in close proximity to the
house.
-
Closing all windows prior to the power washing of the house.
-
Opening of all windows just after the painting of any window(s) to ensure they are
not painted shut.
-
Communicating with neighbours regarding painting activities and, where necessary,
to gain permission to use neighboring properties in order to facilitate access to
various areas on the project.
-
The client will also be responsible for the final inspection with the manager and
their staff on the day of completion. This will be done after the manager and staff
have completed their initial inspection and rectified any deficiencies they have
found.
-
All garbage will be bagged by the crew and the client will be responsible for placing
garbage for curb collection. (Note: All paint cans will be empty and all items within
the bags will meet collection standards).
Interior
Surface preparation is an important aspect of interior painting and your University
First Class Painters manager will recommend the process necessary to properly prepare
your home. Sanding rough areas, filling nail holes, caulking trim and other interior
repair are standard items in our interior preparation process. Crisp straight lines,
smooth finishes and durable surfaces are what you should expect from our interior
painting service.
Generally most interior projects will follow this process:
-
Prepare the area (furniture placement, drop sheets and plastic coverings)
-
Clean where necessary
-
Tape where necessary
-
Fill all hairline cracks and pin holes
-
Caulk all gaps in trim
-
Paint according to the specifications provided
Interior preparation can vary according to job requirements and it is very common
to have supplementary items added to the above specifications such as:
-
Washing of surfaces
-
Buff sanding of walls and trim surfaces to ensure adhesion
-
Priming of bare drywall
-
Priming of surface(s) with high adhesion primer
-
Wall repairs such as nail pops, damaged drywall and large cracks
-
Any other necessary preparation will be specifically stated on the proposal

It is noted that in some cases that a client may not be able to complete the tasks
required above. Our staff can, at times, take on some of these tasks and in such
cases there will be an extra charge added to the work order.
-
The client will also be responsible for the final inspection with the manager and
their staff on the day of completion. This will be done after the manager and staff
have completed their initial inspection and rectified any deficiencies they have
found.
-
All garbage will be bagged by the crew and the client will be responsible for placing
garbage for curb collection. (Note: All paint cans will be empty and all items within
